![]() That being said, it doesn't mean Remington doesn't share some of the blame. The 742 has a bad reputation of being unreliable, but 90%+ of the problems I have seen with them all resulted from poor (or none at all) maintenance. I've owned a few myself, including a pristine one in 6mm, but like an idiot I got rid of it. Growing up, I probably saw more 742s (and Win 94's or Marlin 336's) than anything else in the woods. For a couple of decades, it was the rifle for hunting deer in the southeast. Now, for those unfamiliar with the 742, it followed the 740 series and was the predecessor to the Model rifles. They bring it out, and instead of a shotgun, turns out to be an older Remington 742 Woodsmaster rifle in. Local pawn shop tells me about a "rusty old shotgun" they have coming out, and asks if I would be interested. I'm a glutton for punishment, and also a sucker for a project. ![]()
